The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe IU South Bend in three sets Tuesday evening.

The Peregrines (6-14, 2-8 CCAC) dropped three hard fought sets (27-25, 25-23, 25-21) to the Titans (11-10, 5-4 CCAC) at the Student Activities Center.

The Peregrines started the match off with a 5-2 lead in the opening set, thanks to kills by Carley Bartolini (Portage, Ind./Chesterton), Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and Senior Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township/Kishwaukee) to jump start the Black and Gold.

The Titans would eventually tie the match at 14-14, before taking a 20-16 lead late in Set 1.

The Peregrines knotted the match up at 21-21, and continued to trade points back and forth with the titans until 25-25.

IUSB would tally the next two points to give them the 27-25 Set 1 win.

The second set, much like the first, saw multiple tied scores and lead changes, as the Peregrines exchanged points with the Titans for the majority of the game.

Purdue Calumet trailed 10-7 in the first part of the set, but a trio of kills from Carissa Jones (Hammond, Ind./ Bishop Noll) gave the Peregrines momentum to tie the set at 13-13.

IUSB would take a 21-20 toward the latter half of Set 2 before Muhammad recorded a pair of kills to put the Peregrines ahead 22-21.

The Titans would even the set at 22-22 and eventually came away with a 25-23 Set 2 win.

IU South Bend gained an early advantage in Set 3, starting off with a 12-7 lead before using that momentum to finish the set with a 25-21 win.

The Peregrines were led by Muhammad who notched eight kills and a .231 attack percentage while Bartolini finished the match with 26 assists and three kills.

The Peregrines return to action Thursday, Oct. 8 as they host Olivet Nazarene University at the Fitness and Recreation Center at 7:00 p.m.

The Purdue University Calumet Men’s Soccer team used an offensive surge to lift them past Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday night.

The Peregrines (8-1-1, 4-1, CCAC) used two goals in the first half to give the Black and Gold a 2-0 lead heading in to the break over the Fighting Saints (2-10, 0-6 CCAC).

Sophomore Forward Tulio Ribeiro (Itajuba, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coracao de Jesus) recorded his first goal of the season in the 19th minute on a pass from Papa Otoo (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River), followed by sophomore Zac Doepke (Troy, Mich./Troy) who also tallied his first season goal, giving the Peregrines a 2-0 lead heading in to the break.

After the Fighting Saints notched a goal to put USF within one, 2-1, in the 57th minute, the Peregrines would get some help on a Fighting Saint own goal to give Purdue Calumet a 3-1 advantage.

Ribeiro would tally his second goal of the match, followed by Matthew Willinger’s (Haubstadt,Ind./Gibson Southern) first career goal, helping solidify the Peregrines 5-1 victory.

Junior midfielder Nicolau Monteiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/IBMEC) registered 2 assists while keeper Marco Zendejas notched two saves in 90 minutes for his first career win for the Peregrines.

The Black and Gold outshot the Fighting Saints 27-11, with 14 of those shots being on goal.

The Peregrines will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 10, as they host Judson University in a CCAC contest. The match is set to start at 2:30 p.m at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.
