The No. 11 Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team’s ninth-straight win over rival Calumet College of St. Joseph was never in doubt in Wednesday’s convincing 77-51 league opening win on the road.

The Peregrines (5-1, 1-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) stormed out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, as Purdue Calumet saw 12 players see action in the 26-point victory at the Rittenmeyer Center.

Sophomore Katie Wampler (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) led the way on the scoreboard for the Peregrines, as the forward netted a career-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. She added eight rebounds, and a career-best six steals.

Senior center Patrice McBee (Culver, Ind./Culver Community) chipped in the 46th double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 5-of-11 from the field to go along with three blocks and two assists.

After CCSJ (0-5, 0-2) scored first on a Brittni Kisul jumper, a Dariyan Morris (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) bucket kick-started a 22-4 over the next eight minutes to help put the game out of reach early. Morris, in her first game against her former team, scored five points in the first quarter to lead the Peregrines. Purdue Calumet extended its lead to 23 at the half, leading 40-17 after sophomore Alexis Johnson (Portage, Ind./Portage) had a steal and fast-break jumper on the visitor’s final possession.

The Peregrines held the Crimson Wave to just eight field goals in the first half, but Calumet St. Joseph actually outshot the Peregrines’ percentage-wise, shooting 40 percent (22-of-55) compared to 38.8 percent (31-of-80) for Purdue Calumet. The Black & Gold won the battle on the boards, 51-39, and forced the Crimson Wave into 28 turnovers with 21 Peregrine steals.

Sophomore Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added eight points and nine rebounds, Morris had nine points and three steals and junior Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) chipped in eight points for Purdue Calumet. Johnson also had a career night, adding a career-best eight points to go with four points and two steals.

Samirah Ali led Calumet St. Joseph with 17 points and Julyssa Saez and Kisul each had 12 points to lead the host team.

Wednesday’s victory marked the 22nd all-time victory over CCSK for the Peregrines, who lead the series, 22-4, including nine straight.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday, Nov. 21, for an important CCAC matchup with St. Ambrose (Iowa). The Peregrines will play the second game of a doubleheader with the men’s teams, with the women’s tip off set for 1 p.m. CT.

Saturday is also Kids Day sponsored by Nipsco, as Purdue Calumet offers free admission to all kids under 18, plus activities including bouncy houses, face-painting, an autograph poster session, and more. The first 150 kids will also receive a free T-shirt.

The Purdue University Calumet men’s basketball team lost to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Calumet St. Joseph, 84-69, Wednesday night.

The Peregrines (4-2, 0-1 CCAC) fell to the Crimson Wave (5-2 1-0 CCAC) in the first CCAC matchup of the season for both teams.

Junior LaBradford Sebree (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) led all scorers with 21 points, while Chandler Spring (Covington, Ind./Covington) picked up 12 points while connecting on a trio of three-point field goals.

Daulton Albanese (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) notched 10 points and junior big man Danny Paschen (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Peregrines in the setback.

CCSJ would take an early lead over the Black and Gold, but a jumper by Albanese put the Peregrines within four points, 29-25.

Calumet St. Joseph would end up taking a 46-36 lead at the half, after hitting eight three-point field goals in the opening period to give the Crimson Wave an early advantage.

The Peregrines would battle with CCSJ for the rest of the second half, but the Crimson Wave wouldn’t lose their lead, coming away with an 84-69 win over Purdue Calumet.

Josh Freeman led the Crimson Wave with 19 points to headline the four CCSJ players in double-figures.

The Peregrines return to action Saturday, Nov 21 when they host CCAC opponent St. Ambrose at the Fitness and Recreation Center at 11 a.m CT.
