Purdue University Northwest Sports Update, September 26, 2016

PNW-Mudd-Leads-Purdue-Northwest-Team-Stands-Third-after-Day-1-at-Harbor-Links Mudd Leads Purdue Northwest; Team Stands Third after Day 1 at Harbor Links Patrick Mudd’s 18-hole round of 80 led the way on Day 1 of the Indiana East Harbor Links Invitational Sunday at Harbor Links Golf Course.

Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) stands in fifth place overall in the field of 37, as the Purdue Northwest men’s squad placed third with a mark of 330.

PNW sophomore Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) wasn’t far behind Mudd, as his round of 81 stood tied with freshman teammate Brian Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) for sixth place overall.

Freshman Aaron Skibinski (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) both tied with rounds of 88 to round out the Pride scoring.

Taylor Suggs of leader Cincinnati Christian (313) led the field with his round of 71. Shawnee State stood second in the team standings after Day 1 with a 318, 12 strokes ahead of PNW’s 330.

PNW will kick off the final round of the two-day tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT at Harbor Links Golf Course.

PNW Men's Tennis Tops CCSJ, 7-2 The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team started off the conference season on a high note as the Pride defeated crosstown rival Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday.

The Pride (1-0) defeated the Crimson Wave (0-1) by a score of 7-2 at Dowling Park’s Community Hospital Tennis Complex.

PNW freshman Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany/International School on the Rhine) won handily in No. 1 singles, as he defeated Calumet St. Joseph's Santiago Castaenda in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Ronald Reagan) also won in straight sets for the Pride, 6-0, 6-0, against the Crimson Wave's Erwin Krackow.

Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was also able to pick up the victory in No. 3 singles against CCSJ's Andres Farfan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

John Mamelson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) also won at No. 4 singles, defeating Nilson Cano in No. 4 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Gisy and Villacres continued their big day in No. 1 doubles, as the duo defeated Castaneda and Sigh from the Crimson Wave, 8-2.

The Pride return to action next Saturday, Oct. 1, for a nonconference matchup against Bethel College at at Dowling Park scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

Purdue Northwest Falls to St. Xavier, 1-0 The Purdue University Northwest women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Xavier Saturday afternoon.

The Pride (2-6, 0-3 CCAC) outshot the Cougars (1-6-1, 1-1 CCAC) 12-7, with Shayla McNeal (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) leading the way with five total shots, while Shelby Ross (Nashville, Ind./Columbus North) tallied four shots, with three on goal.

Both teams battled to keep the score even through one period, 0-0, but the Cougars would come out of the break to score the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute.

Julia Gawlak connected on a goal from within the 18-yard box after receiving a pass from Brittany Kroening which gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

The Pride had a chance to even the score in the 71st minute, but Saint Xavier goalkeeper Alex Perry rejected the shot attempt from McNeal, leaping to the top part of the goal and just knocking the ball out of play from under the cross bar to keep SXU ahead by one.

The Cougars would hold PNW scoreless for the remainder of the match, coming away with the 1-0 victory.

Sophomore keeper Lucie Ashmore (Greystones, Ireland/St. Gerard’s School) recorded three saves in the setback.

The Black and Gold return to action Wednesday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Deerfield, Ill. for a CCAC contest with Trinity International at 4 p.m. (CT).

Purdue Northwest Plays SXU to Scoreless Draw The Purdue University Northwest men’s soccer team battled for 110 minutes but were not able to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw in two overtimes against conference opponent St. Xavier University Saturday.

The Pride (3-3-3, 1-0-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) outshot the Cougars (0-6-2, 0-0-2) by a 24-14 margin, but SXU keeper Frank Valle stopped 11 PNW shots to preserve the tie for the visitors in a match played at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

Freshman Alex Guarino (Saint John, Ind./Marian Catholic) led PNW with five shots, one on goal, and teammates Felix Guenzel (Munich, Germany) and Jose Andriano (Mexico City, Mexico) added three shots apiece.

Purdue Northwest freshman keeper Evan Hillier (Highland, Ind./Highland) stopped five shots in his second start in goal, improving to 1-0-1 for the Pride.

Danny Lopez led SXU with four shots and Orlando Tapia and Mike McLaughlin had three each for the Cougars.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 27, when the Pride travel to Deerfield, Ill., for a CCAC contest at Trinity International. Match time is set for 4 p.m. CT.

Weissbeck's Top 20 Finish Leads PNW at Brissman Lundeen Purdue University Northwest freshman Emma Weissbeck led the way for the Pride women’s cross country team with her Top 20 finish in Friday’s Brissman Lundeen Invitational at Saukie Golf Course.

Weissbeck (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) placed 16th overall with a 5-kilometer time of a 24 minutes, 50 seconds, in the field of 226 individuals and 26 teams.

Purdue Northwest finished 17th overall with 441 points in the race won by Iowa Central (71 points). Lindenwood University was second with 125 points and Bethel College third with 129 points.

Sophomore Sarah Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was the next PNW finisher, placing 65th overall with a time of 26:27, followed by classmate Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) in 86th with a time of 27:09.

Shyla Huppenthal (Boulder, Colo./Northglenn) placed 166th overall with a time of 30:00 and teammate Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) rounded out the Pride scoring with a time of 32:29, placing 196th overall.

Iowa Central’s Agnes Mansaray won medalist honors, placing first overall with a time of 22:46.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Saturday, Oct. 1, when the Pride travel to the Louisville (Ky.) Classic.

Ramos Leads Purdue Northwest at Brissman Lundeen The Purdue University Northwest men’s cross country team finished 13th overall in the field of 31 at the Brissman Lundeen Invitational Gold Meet Friday afternoon.

Freshman Christopher Ramos (Hobart, Ind./River Forest) led the way for the Black and Gold, finishing 19th out of over 200 runners with a time of 27:32.

Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) was the next finisher for the Pride, recording a time of 28:01 and finishing 29th while Robert Corning (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) finished third on the PNW squad with a time of 29:52.

Sophomore Mark Peters (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) finished just behind Corning with a time of 30:45 and Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) would round out the top-five for the Pride with a time of 31:35.

Iowa Central would run away with the Gold Title, finishing with a team score of 58 while Alec Bass from the University of Dubuque earned the top spot individually with a time of 25:51.

The Purdue Northwest men’s team will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Greater Louisville Classic at 9:00 a.m.
