PNW-Cordova-Sets-School-Record-to-lead-PNW-Men-in-IowaCordova Sets School Record to lead PNW Men in Iowa Behind Salvador Cordova’s school-record finish, the Purdue University Northwest men’s cross country team saw six runners get season personal-bests in Saturday’s Seminole Valley Stampede in Cedar Rapids.

Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) ran a program-best 8-kilomter time of 26 minutes, 10 seconds, to capture the record by seven seconds and finish 25th overall in the 244-runner race.

PNW teammate and cousin Alex Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) also captured a season-best to finish second for the Pride, crossing the finish line in a time of 26:41 to place 48th overall.

Freshman Chris Ramos (Hobart, Ind./River Forest) was next, finishing 104th with a time of 27:42, while teammate Robert Corning (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) was fourth for the Pride with a time of 28:41 (137th), which set a season-best by 22 seconds.

Junior Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) rounded out PNW’s scoring with a time of 28:54 to place 147th overall.

Also setting season-bests for PNW were Mark Peters (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) with a time of 29:52, Jordan Posthauer (Crawfordsville, Ind./Fountain Central) with a time of 30:27, and Martin Estrada (Gary, Ind./Lowell) with a mark of 31:51.

Purdue Northwest completed its last regular-season meet Saturday and eyes the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by St. Francis (Ill.) Nov. 5 in Joliet, Ill.

Weissbeck's Top 25 Finish Leads Purdue Norhwest Women's Cross Country Freshman Emma Weissbeck led the pack for the Purdue University Northwest women’s cross country team with her 24th place finish at Saturday’s Seminole Valley Stampede in Cedar Rapids.

Weissbeck (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) ran a time of 19 minutes, 20 seconds, to place 24th overall in the 216-runner 5-kilomter race held at Seminole Valley Park.

The Pride scored 427 points to place 17th overall in the 25-team race, won by the University of St. Francis (55 points).

Sophomore Kyleigh Werner (Westville, Ind./Westville) was the next finisher for the Pride, crossing the finish line in a time of 20:14 to place 67th overall. Teammate Amanda Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was one step behind in 68th with a big season PR of 20:17 and classmate Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was next in 134th place with a time of 21:37.

Junior Shyla Huppenthal (Boulder, Colo./Northglenn) rounded out the PNW scoring with a time of 23:42 to place 185th overall.

Vega's Hat Trick Propels Purdue Northwest to 7-0 Win at Holy Cross Behind a unprecedented offensive explosion, the Purdue University Northwest women’s soccer team blanked conference foe Holy Cross College 7-0 Saturday on the road.

The Pride (5-10, 3-7 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) saw its first hat trick of the season from any player, as freshman Alexa Vega (West Chicago, Ill./Community) connected for three-straight goals and classmate Amari Andrews (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) added two more to lead the big offensive effort.

Freshman Mariah Fowler (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) and sophomore Shelby Ross (Nashville, Ind./Columbus North) added one goal apiece for PNW, which snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.

Sophomore keepers Lucie Ashmore (Greystones, Ireland/St. Gerard’s School) and Kelley Sharp (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) teamed up to collect the shutout, as Ashmore started the contest and Sharp had two saves in the second 45 minutes.

Ross picked up the game winner in just the 12’ on an unassisted strike, followed by three-straight scores from Vega to make it 4-0 in the 40’. Fowler added the fifth before the half on a pass from Marisa Jayne (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) to give PNW a 5-0 lead at the break.

Andrew would add the final two scores in the 52’ and 59’, the first on an assist from Fowler, to give the final 7-0 score.

The win marked the second shutout of the season and the biggest offensive production of the season for PNW, who outshot the Saints (2-14, 0-10) by a 26-4 margin and totaled 13 corner kicks compared to zero for HCC.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 26, when the Pride host Trinity Christian in their home finale at Pepsi Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m. CT at Dowling Park.

Men's Soccer Defeats Holy Cross, 3-1, Saturday Afternoon The Purdue Northwest Men’s Soccer team picked up their sixth straight victory Saturday afternoon after defeating Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Holy Cross, 3-1.

The Pride (9-4-3, 7-1-2 CCAC) took an early lead in the 11th minute of the match, after a corner kick pass from Chris Rassel (St.John, Ind./Lake Central) found Djordje Cancarevic (Painesville, Ohio/Chippewa) who headed his fifth goal of the season to put the Pride up 1-0.

PNW would hold the Saints (7-8-1, 4-6 CCAC) scoreless for the rest of the half, taking a 1-0 advantage in to the break.

Purdue Northwest would add on to their lead 15 minutes in to the second half, after Jaime Garcia (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) found Tulio Ribeiro (Itajuba, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coracao de Jesus) who found the back of the net and give the Black and Gold a 2-0 advantage.

The Pride continued to pressure the Saints and tack on another goal in the 67th minute, after Afolabi Jacob (Lagos, Nigeria.Sound Global College) notched his first goal of the season on a pass from Jaime Garcia to put the Pride ahead 3-0.

Holy Cross would score on a penalty kick in the 84th minute, but that was all they would get, as the Pride came a way with the 3-1 victory.

Keeper Miguel David recorded the win in goal for PNW, recording one save, while Michael Brownsea (Albury, Austrailia/Albury) and Afolabi Jacob each tallied a team-high three shots to headline the PNW leaders.

PNW will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 25, when they host Trinity Christian at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field at 3 p.m. (CT).

PNW Volleyball Picks up Two Wins at Moody Bible Invite The Purdue University Northwest volleyball picked up a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at the Moody Bible Institute Tri-Match, defeating the host Archers followed by a four-set win over Robert Morris-Springfield.

The Pride (15-11) defeated the Archers (7-10) in four sets, (25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17) followed by a four-set victory over the Eagles, (25-8, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18).

Purdue Northwest 3, Moody Bible 1

Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) led all attackers with her 4-set career-high 20 kills while also registering 3 service aces. Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) notched a double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs while freshman Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington)registered 40 assists with 11 digs to round out the PNW leaders.

The Pride came out strong in the opening set, taking an early 12-6 advantage on a kill from Cami Webster (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley).

They would continue to have a substantial lead over the archers for the remainder of Set 1, with a pair of service aces from Pasko to end the set and give the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

The Archers would even the score in the second set and tie the match up at one set apiece, but the Black and Gold would answer with a third set victory and take a 2-1 lead.

Purdue Northwest would take a commanding 16-7 lead in the fourth set, and use that momentum to carry them to a 25-17 win and defeat the Archers in four sets.

Purdue Northwest 3, RMU-Springfield 1

Martin matched her 4-set career-high from the prior in the day with another 20 kill performance over the Eagles, while also recording 10 digs.

Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) led the Black and Gold with a .571 attack percentage, recording 12 kills without recording an error, along with two block assists.

Ahrens also had an impressive match, tallying 47 assists and 12 digs while Webster finished with 10 kills and a .500 attack percentage.

After being tied 6-6 to start off the first set, Purdue Northwest went on a 14-2 run, thanks to a balanced scoring attack which gave the Pride a 20-8 advantage, and eventually would come away with the 25-8 win.

The Eagles would take the second set 25-22, but the Pride would bounce back nicely in the third set and take a 13-1 lead.

After holding on to the lead to win 25-13 and take a 2-1 advantage, the Black and gold would finish strong to take Set 4 and come out with two wins on the day.

PNW will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 25, when they face-off with Calumet St. Joseph in Whiting, Ind. at 7 p.m. (CT).
