Cougars Send Wave To Sixth Straight Loss

CCSJ-Cougars-Send-Wave-To-Sixth-Straight-LossStill looking for their first win of the young season, the Calumet College of St. Joseph men's volleyball headed back into action after a weeklong break this evening, taking on Saint Xavier University. The Cougars pounced as soon as the first serve went up however, handily defeating the Wave 3-0 (14-25, 15-25, 17-25) Tuesday night in Chicago.

CCSJ (0-6, 0-4 CCAC) were outmatched this evening right from the start, and the statistics showed. The Wave hit only .065 for the game and committed 17 errors, while SXU racked up only nine attack errors to go with a hitting percentage of .443. The Wave held a brief 3-2 lead in the first set before the Cougars went on an 11-2 run to secure the initial 25-14 victory. The storyline was the same in the second frame, as the Wave kept up early, only to allow another big run to put the set out of reach at 25-15. The Wave did improve point total wise from one set to the next, tallying 17 points in the final set on the night. The Crimson and Gray were only down three late at 19-16, but once again an elongated point streak ended good guys hopes of a potential fourth set with a 25-17 defeat.

Trevor Wagner (JR/Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the team with seven kills on the evening, while Jose Gonzalez (SR/Calumet City, Ill.) paced the team with six digs, the first time leading Calumet in that category this season. Roberto Morales (FR/Calumet City, Ill.) kept collecting assists once again, managing to add 19 to his total. Not to be shutout of the team leads on the evening, Liam Fagan (SR/Crete, Ill.) put together two of the teams four block assists.

Regardless of the loss, the Wave will have plenty of opportunities this week to finally get in the win column. With three matches left play through Saturday evening, their first stop will be against fourth ranked Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa on Thursday evening. First serve in the CCAC matchup is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
