Viking Football Team Advances with Sectional Win Over Portage

On a chilly Friday night, Valparaiso High School football team hosted their first sectional game of the year against their opponent Portage High School on October 21, 2011 in the opening match of the Sectional round of the IHSAA State Football Tournament.

Portage took on an early 3-0 lead on their first possession. Most of the first quarter was full of penalties from both teams. Valpo was able to jump on the board with a touchdown with about two minutes left of the 1st quarter making the score 7-3.

During the second quarter, each team threw interceptions, keeping their fans sitting on the edge of their seats. Portage drove down scoring 6 points with a short pass, but Valpo blocked the extra point, making the score 9-7 in favor of Portage. Valpo had one last drive before the half but could not convert on the third down against a tough Portage defense.

Both teams came back strong during the 3rd quarter. Portage was able to fight through Valpo’s defense in the end zone for a 2-point conversion, and Valpo found an opening in Portage’s defense to gain another touch down. With two minutes left, Portage sneaked in another touchdown ending the quarter with a score of 14-17.

Early in the 4th quarter, Valpo’s offense scored a touchdown and good field goals bring the score to 21-17. Valpo scored again late in the game bring the final score to 28-17. Congratulations Valpo on your first tournament win and good luck on your road to state! Valpo will advance to a semifinal matchup at Crown Point on October 28th.
