Viking Sports Report, December 8 – 16, 2017

vhs-logoThe freshman girls’ basketball team defeated Crown Point 27-24 this past Thursday night. Lucia Otten scored 12 points and Payton Gallowitch had 4 rebounds and 4 assists. The play of the game (and the year thus far) was a deflected pass by Ryanne Reese who then went to the floor to recover the ball, flipped it to Lucia who passed ahead to Sydney Vorrier for a critical basket. Nice win ladies and great team effort! On Tuesday, they travelled to LaPorte to take on the Slicers. Valpo held on to win 27-24. Sydney Vorrier led the Vikings with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. The key to the game was the Vikes inside defense and rebounding.

On Friday, the girls’ JV basketball team travelled to LaPorte and took on the Slicers. The game was tied at halftime and the Vikes played from behind throughout much of the second half. With a furious comeback in the waning moments of the game they came away with a 49-46 total team effort victory. Grace Healy led the scoring with 13 followed by Annelise Rubin with 10 points. Saturday they travelled to Highland to take on the Trojans. They came away with a 36-17 victory. Grace Healy and Hailey Gates led with 6 points each and were followed by Bella Bukur with 5. The JV is now 6-2 and 2-0 in the DAC.

The Varsity girls’ lost a tough, physical game against LaPorte on Friday 62-51. Ari Gerdt scored 19 and Taelynn Oelling added 10 points in the conference loss. Things turned around for the Vikings on Saturday as they defeated Highland 47-39. Ari Gerdt again led the team in scoring with 16 followed by Aleah Fergren with 10 points. The Varsity is now 7-3 and 1-1 in the DAC.

The freshmen boys’ team has played three games in the past week. The “A” team defeated Crown Point 45-28 with Allen Naji leading the way with 10 points and AJ Alburo chipping in 9. They then beat Hobart 60-17 where Clay MacLagan scored 15 points and Jojo Villagran and Grant Comstock added 10 points each. On Tuesday, they beat LaPorte 47-10. Jojo Villagran scored 12 points and Allen Naji and 8. They are now 4-1 on the season. The “B” team defeated Crown Point 33-19 leading the way was Jimmy Noonan with 8 points, and Tommy Burbee with 6. They played an additional two quarters against LaPorte. Jacob Nightingale had 6 points and Jimmy Noonan added 4. Last night, the “A” team defeated Chesterton 28-27. Allen Naji led the way with 11points followed by Jo Villagran with 7. The “B” team won 40-16 with Jimmy Noonan scoring 9 and Tommy Burbee adding 8. The “A” team sits at 5-1 on the season,

The boys’ JV basketball team hosted the Mishawaka Cavemen on Saturday. They came away with a 51-31 victory taking their record to 3-0 on the young season. Leading the way for the Vikings were Carter Casko and Brandon Mack with 10 points each. On Tuesday, they defeated Lowell 61-28. CJ Opperman led the way with 14 points followed by Logan Mersman with 10 and Brandon Mack

The Varsity took down the Cavemen 66-58. Brandon Newman led the way with 27 points and 10 rebounds followed by Nathan Aerts with 16 points and Colton Jones with 12. Collin Walls pulled down 4 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. They travelled to The Pit in Lowell and dispatched the Red Devils 58-43. Brandon Newman led all scorers with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Marcus Gholston added 14 points and 4 rebounds with Nathan Aerts adding 9 points and Max Otterbacher 7. The Vikings are currently ranked #20 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll and #15 in the Class 4A AP poll.

The freshmen wrestlers travelled to Crown Point on Monday to participate in a six way match with Crown Point, Merrillville, Hobart, Bishop Noll, and Munster. They finished 12-2 as a team! Michael Sobeck went 1-1, Ethan McFadyen 2-0, Jaeden Hufford 3-0, Reese Mayernik 1-1, JB Cioe 1-0, Tommy Stalmah 2-0, and David Bittorf 2-0. Nice job grapplers!

The Varsity wrestling team hosted the Viking Duals this past weekend and defeated DAC opponent Michigan City 63-15. They also picked up wins against Bishop Noll, Warsaw, and Gary West Side to finish the day 4-1. The Vikings had three undefeated wrestlers on the day, Joey Strickland (120), Ronnie Deluna (170), and Joey McIntyre (170).

Girls’ swimming travelled to Crown Point on Tuesday evening and came away with a 100-86 victory. Senior Maddie Miltenberger swam some of her best early season performances in her 50 and 100 freestyle events. Isa Johnson swam a strong second half of her 100 butterfly for a season best time. Bri Pniak had an awesome swim in her 100 backstroke and coming back to out-touch her opponent for a first place finish. Freshman Shannon McCall swam a 5:18 in her 500 freestyle, making her the fastest distance freshman in the VHS program since our 500 freestyle record holder Kirsten Johnson (1992).
