Valparaiso High School introduced their new head football coach, Steven Mueller, last night. Coach Mueller is a 1988 VHS graduate. Welcome Coach Mueller, we look forward to the 2018 season. Go Vikings!
Girls’ swimming competed in the DAC meet this past Saturday at LaPorte. Highlights were the 2nd place Medley Relay of Shannon McCall, Lizzie Simac, Bri Pniak, and Jackie Bontrager with a time of 1:55.07, the 2nd place 100 Breastroke of Lizzie Simac in a time of 1:07.32, and the 3rd place finish in the 100 Freestyle, by Jackie Bontrager in a time of 55.20.
The wrestling team had three wrestlers place at the DAC tournament this past weekend. Ian Dembowski placed 2nd at the 138 pound weight class. Joey McIntyre won an exciting third place match at 195 pounds and freshmen Colin Kwiatkowski had a nice showing placing 6th at 160 pounds.
The Gymnastics team defeated Michigan City this past Thursday, 108.75 to 63.775, to raise their record to 2-0. Rachel Moneta won Vault, Beam, and All-Around, with Jenna Algozine taking Uneven Bars and Floor. The Vikes also won Team II with a score of 100.525. Highlights from the meet included Haley Utsler on Vault; Eden Roberts new beam series, and PRs by Katie Pastoret, Marissa Story, and Ella Montgomery.
The Gymnastics team won the six team Viking Invite this past Saturday with a score of 110.0. The defending State champs had the highest team score on all four events, and won every event and All- Around. Rachel Moneta won Vault, Floor, and All-Around, with Jenna Algozine taking Uneven Bars and Beam. Freshmen Hallie Utsler, Ella Montgomery, and Sabrina Falk, as well as teammates Megan Wagenblast, Sami Bluhm, Marissa Story, and Hannah Falk provided the needed depth to secure the victory.
The boys’ swim team swam a quick meet against Highland a week ago Thursday, coming away with a victory 113-67. First place finishes went to the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. Liam Shepherd swam a season best time of 5:31.17 and placed first in the 500 freestyle. Sam Stazinski continues to show huge improvements in the 100 breaststroke with a best time of 1:12.04. Isaac Anderson also dropped time in the 200 freestyle swimming a 2:06.92 for a new personal record. On Thursday they traveled to Michigan City and came away with a win of 113-71. The 200 IM was a solid event for the Viking’s with a 1, 2 finish from Alex Stamp (2:19.48) and Zach Juhl (2:20.68). Ryan Hrosik (21.85) and Cole St. Aubin (48.80) also had first place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free. All three of the Viking relays 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free finished first with good swims across the board.
The freshmen boys’ B team hosted a tournament on January 6. In the first game we defeated Crown Point 53-43 and Tommy Burbee led the Vikings with 16 points. In the championship game, they defeated Penn 37-32 and Jake Metz was the leading scorer with 13 points. The A team has played several times since the last write up. Here are those results. On January 4, they defeated Michigan City 45-31. Jojo Villagran scored 9 and Clay MacLagan 7 in the win. On January 6, they defeated South Bend Clay 64-8 with Clay Maclagan scoring 16 points and Jojo Villagran with 13 and Allen Naji 12. On January 13, they defeated new Prairie 62-22 with Grant Comstock leading the way with 8 points, Jake Metz with 8, and Warren Sails with 7. On January 15, they defeated Bishop Noll 50-15 with Clay MacLagan scoring 14, Grant Comstock 11, and Allen Naji 10.
The freshmen girls’ basketball team lost to Crown Point 38-21 on Monday. Lucia Otten led the scoring with 9 points.
The JV girls’ basketball team defeated Michigan City on Monday in a makeup game from last Friday. The won 43-32 with Annelise Rubin leading the way with 13 points followed by Sara Cavanaugh with 8 and Anastasia Tsagris with 7 points. They are now 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the DAC. The Varsity lost 52-45 with Ari Gerdt leading the way with 14 points followed by Taylor Zimmerman with 9 and Shea Pendleton with 8 points. They are now 11-9 and 3-3 in the DAC.
