Vikings Sports Report May 11-19, 2018

vhs-logoThe girls’ tennis team defeated 19th ranked Penn on Friday 3-2. #1 singles Alexis Orlich, #2 singles AK Flude, and #3 singles Julie Wappel were are victorious. The JV won 4-3. They lost to conference rival Chesterton on Monday 3-2. #3 singles Julie Wappel and #1 doubles Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans were victorious. The JV lost 6-5. They defeated Lake Central 4-1 on Tuesday. #1 Alexis Orlich, #2 AK Flude, #3 singles Julie Wappel, and #1 doubles Ema Gilliana and Keeley Evans were all victorious. They defeated Merrillville 5-0 on Thursday. Alexis Orlich, AK Flude, Julie Wappel, Keeley Evans, Ema Gilliana, Ainsley Grabarek, and Grace Healy were all victorious. The JV won 10-3. The Varsity is now 10-3 and the JV is 12-3.

The Varsity baseball team defeated Crown Point 6-5 Friday evening. This was continuation of the game being suspended due to weather on Wednesday. Matt Jindra earned the win and Nick Caputo earned his fourth save of the year. Ryan Vendl led the offensive attack with 3 hits and 2 RBI's. Gunnar Pullins also added 2 hits for the Vikings. The Vikings continued their winning ways at Lowell with a 17-0 win on Saturday. Noah Comstock got the win pitching 6 solid innings. Charlie Healy, Logan Spillers, Noah Comstock, Zack Zborowski, and Connor Brinson all had 2 or more RBI's each. The team lost to Portage on Tuesday, 4-3. The Vikings were led offensively by Cameron Brice and Ryan Vendl. Ryan Troxel took the hard luck loss. They suffered another tough loss to Portage on Thursday, 4-2. Matt Jindra pitched the complete game taking the loss. They are 9-5 overall and 4-5 in the DAC.

The JV Viking baseball team fell to Crown Point 6-2 last week. The game was played over two days due to weather. The Vikings rebounded on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Lowell. Freshman Blake Lemmon was lights out on the mound (5 IP 3 H 1 R 4 K) CJ Opperman pitched the final two innings and earned the save. The offense was led by Spencer Reed (4-4 with 3 R and 2 RBI) and Evan Tharp (3 hits). The JV Vikings defeated Portage 4-3 on Tuesday. Grant Comstock earned the win after relieving starter John Mudd. Every Viking starter contributed offensively. The back and forth game was finally decided after the Vikes scored in the top of the 7th to break the 3-3 tie. Jack Cahill was 3-3 at the plate. Tyler Bukur hit massive solo home run. Spencer Reed had the game winning hit and RBI. The Vikings move to 12-5 overall and 7-4 in the DAC.

The freshmen baseball team defeated Morgan Township on Monday 12-1. Elan Reid pitched four innings giving up one run. Nick Koprcina pitched 1 inning and closed the game. Kyle Lawrence went 2-3 with 2 singles and an RBI. Elan Reid went 1-3 with a triple and 3 RBI’s. They are now 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the DAC.

The Vikings boys’ golf team finished first this weekend, the team was lead my Mark Civanich's one under par round of 71. Andrew Karr shot 75, Zach Holmes 77 and Ryan Gring broke the 80 mark with a 79. This is the second first place finish this season for the Vikings. The next tournament for the Vikings will be the Uebele tournament in LaPorte. This is the oldest boy's golf tournament in the United States. Scores go back as far as pre-World War 2. The Vikings have won this tournament 7 times over the many years. The boys’ golf team travelled to Crown Point on Tuesday to take on Crown Point and Merrillville at White Hawk. They defeated both teams with Michael Smith sharing medalist honors with a one under par round and Andrew Karr in 3rd with an even par. They are 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the DAC tied for the first place. The JV lost to Crown Point. Ben Kroeger was 3rd and Trent Risetter 5th. They are now 7-4 overall.

The C-Team softball team lost 9-3 against Crown Points on Friday. Jazmine Cwenta hit another home run. It was her 3rd of the season. The JV team lost 11-0 to Lake Central on Tuesday. They lost to Crown Point 5-7 on Thursday. They are now 7-9 on the season.

The girls’ track and field team had an outstanding week, winning the DAC JV meet on Saturday and finishing 2nd in the DAC championship on Tuesday. In the JV Conference meet, Anastasia Tsagris won the 400 m dash, followed closely by her twin sister Xanthi and freshman Morgan Catchur in 2nd and 3rd. Other firsts were turned in by junior Adrianna McFarland in the 300 hurdles, sophomore Nicole Brandy in the 3200, freshman Kate Pastoret with a fabulous height of 5' 3 in the high jump, and sophomore Grace Bonczyk in the long jump. Additional fine performances were turned in by Adrianna Kimes, Maddy Whaling, Claire Brogan, Hannah Fitzgerald, Lucy Cobble, Elena Kipp, Emily Coffin, Jenna Howard, Claire Lopez, Olivia Zell, and Hannah Shepherd.

In the varsity meet, the girls had a meet best SIX individual champions, led by double winners senior Maddie Ochs (shot put and discus) and sophomore Ava Gilliana (800 m run and 1600 m run). To add to that, senior Brittney Clark was the pole vault champion and freshman Bella Grisafi sprinted her way to first place in the 400 m dash. Other scorers were freshman Precious Harvey in both hurdle races, senior Kellee Davidson (300 hurdles), freshman Sarah Worthington (800 m run), freshman Emily Worthington (1600 m run), senior Logan Ferngren (3rd in the 3200 m run), senior Alyssa Ido (pole vault), and sophomore Jordan Coplan (high jump). Finally, these athletes contributed to our scoring relays: senior Bridget McGrath, junior Kylie Ireland, senior Emma Pollitt, junior Taylor Phillips, senior Carmen Demaree, and sophomore Demaris Hisick.

The Unified Track team traveled to Crown Point High School on Thursday in their final week of competition before sectionals. Highlights from the meet included Jamie Leftridge taking first place in the 100m run with a time of 11.86. Tad Davis ran a 12.2. The girls 4x1 team of Devinn Johnson, Haley Taylor, Mary Anjorin, and Isabel Pati ran a 1:23.42. The Vikings have their final regular season meet on Saturday at South Bend St. Joe High School.

The draw for the IHSAA baseball sectional occurred on Sunday. Chesterton will play Merrillville at 5 PM on Wednesday, May 23 followed by Crown Point vs. Hobart. On Friday, May 25 the winners from Wednesday will play at 5 PM followed by Valparaiso vs. Portage. The Championship game will be played on Monday, May 28 at 11 AM. All games will be played at Chesterton.

The VHS Athletic Department will be celebrating our graduates who will be competing in athletics at the collegiate level next year on May 30th. This event is to recognize all VHS senior students, scholarship, walk on, and non-scholarship student-athletes who will be attending college and continuing their competitive efforts. All are welcome on May 30 in Café C, D, and E at 2:45 PM with cake and celebration!
