BFMS 8th Grade Basketball Recap: Blue Jay Tournament

For the very last time, the 8th grade boys hopped on the rolling Twinkie to make a long and boring trip to North Judson for one final challenge in their middle school basketball season – the Blue Jay Tournament. And just like in the conference tournament and most of the year, the Vikings displayed tenacious defense, unselfish offensive prowess, and an especially great team chemistry in bringing back another 1st place trophy.

In the first game, BF took a little time to get going against Kankakee Valley but found their legs in the 2nd half to cage the Kougars 44 to 23 to meet the host team in the championship. The bully birds, however, were no match for a Viking team determined to finish the season on top as the Green Machine bounced the Blue Jays 59 to 23 to win the tourney.  For the weekend, scoring leaders were Justin Osburn with 22 (20 of them coming in the championship game), Trent Fortson with 18, Alex Healy with 16, and Bret Boetel with 13. Keeping the offense flowing, Bret topped the charts with 7 assists, followed by Trent and Brendan Sutherland, who each tallied 6.

In addition, under the boards, Trent muscled down 13 rebounds, while Triston Rouse corralled 10 caroms, and defensively, Brendan led the team in steals with 5, followed by Justin’s 4. Also contributing to the wins, Jake, Jacob, Kevin, and Serph logged significant and meaningful minutes. Also a huge thank you to Andrew and Nick, who gave up their Saturday to keep stats, and to Noah, Austin, and Gavin for your efforts throughout the season.
