Valpo K9 Unit: Running and Walking for the Good of Our Community

On this brisk and bright day, the Valparaiso Police Department along with their K9 friends welcomed the community with a display of discipline and ever-shining direction. Some business supporters of Valparaiso’s K9 Unit, including Lakeshore PAWS and Healthi Paws, were present and provided members of the community with accessories, food, and possibly new furry companions.

The 5K community run competition and one mile dog walk proceeds went to further fund the police and their canine unit. Whenever they need new equipment to train their comrades such as bite tugs and bite suits, officers request a trip to their K9 gift fund.

“Overall, the purpose of today’s walk and run is to help maintain the police department’s K9 unit. We love to show support of our community, businesses and other sponsors. In return, they do the same for us and we couldn’t be happier,” Officer Todd Kobitz said.

A demonstration was also held—showcasing the abilities of Officer Kobitz’s talented and powerful canine sidekick. The authoritative stance of this strong ally was well matched with his commanding officer. Together, they are truly a force to be reckoned with.

There were a total of three-hundred sixty individuals who attended this event and an additional one-hundred dogs. Members of the community also enjoyed refreshments after running and/or walking and watering their loyal companions.

“The police and the community we serve work together and our healthy, conditioned dogs help all of us. We try to keep the number of crimes low by using K9 abilities along with our own. It helps the community out and also helps us be prepared for whatever comes next,” Officer Kobitz said.

This fantastic event showcased talents from the Valpo Police Department’s K9 Unit and the capabilities of dedicated residents who are thankful to the many dedicated officers who serve and protect. If you haven’t experienced this community fund raiser, then make sure to check it out next year!
