Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana's John Kasper glimpses lives behind the doors

John Kasper packed up his tools and went to start up his truck after finishing a garage door install when he found an uninvited passenger in his front seat – a chicken. The feathered hitchhiker belonged to the homeowner who had converted part of their garage into a chicken coop.

“I went to tell her there’s a chicken in my truck and she just said, ‘Oh, well, they like to get in cars,’” Kasper recalled. “You run into people who have their entire life story buried in their garage. This other time a man had a litter of dogs living in his garage that he didn’t even know about. You never know what you’re going to find.”

Kasper is a technician at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana. It is a job that takes him across the Region and often leads him to interesting stories. The work itself, installing, repairing, or removing garage doors, is pretty simple to him.

“Nine out of 10 times everything is easy. It’s like second nature to me after doing it for so long,” he said. “It’s that other time, where you realize that you’re not going to be able to follow your usual routine that you need to think and adapt.”

This past January marked Kasper’s first full year on the job. He lost track of how many installs and repairs he has done, and found that it is rare for any two jobs to play out the same way.

“A lot of people just answer the door, say ‘Here’s my garage,’ and go,” Kasper said. “Others like to pull up a chair and talk with you while you’re working. I’ve never really had a bad experience. You see so many people excited and happy to get a door. I just recently went to a lady’s house and she hadn’t had a garage door since November and was ecstatic to get one installed – I can’t tell you how excited she was.”

Aside from the work, the stories, and the people, the single biggest thing that makes Overhead Door Kasper’s favorite job is that he feels truly valued.

“The owners are worried about us, how we’re doing, and always make sure we’ve got anything we need,” he said. “My favorite aspect of the job is actually my bosses. I’ve never had bosses like them. They’re very family oriented and understanding about life situations. I wouldn’t replace my job for anything.”

The flexibility that Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana provides allows Kasper to spend time where it matters most: his family. On days off, trips to the Wisconsin Dells, game time, and other family activities are the biggest things on his agenda.
