Marty Terry Employee Spotlight – Teachers Credit Union

Martin Terry, known more often as Marty, is the man you need to talk to about money. With over 30 years of experience in the realms of financial decision making, Terry has dealt with it all. As a financial planner at Teachers Credit Union, Terry has experience in personal finance, trust funds, and investments. He works with TCU members every day and takes pride in the credit union’s culture where all team members make it their responsibility to see their clients succeed financially.

Terry grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and went on to graduate with a finance degree from Central Michigan University. Although he admits he had “dreams of being a park ranger freshman year” he would eventually go on to get a master’s degree in finance as well. Terry’s first job out of college was at a large national bank in Detroit.

While Terry has dealt with trusts, family financial planning, and pension funds, he said learning additional information about investments has been the most interesting. He enjoys the nature of the financial roller coaster, seeing how the numbers fluctuate and how to best prepare clients to set up money to work for them down the road. The most rewarding part of Terry’s job is guiding those who do not firmly understand financial planning and to steer them toward financial freedom.

He also says credit unions are different from other financial institutions in the ways that they help their clients. Because there are not sales commissions or sales quotas, Terry says people genuinely know that TCU has their best interest at heart. “I give advice on what’s best for the member. I’m not focusing on what fee I’ll earn. At TCU, there is no conflict of interest inherent in the guidance that we provide.”

And while Terry is equipped to help you out with your financial matters, he’s also very adept behind a fishing rod. In his off-time Terry enjoys the beauty of the Midwest, particularly in areas like Door County, Wisconsin and Potato Creek State Park. One of his favorite spots in Door County is Peninsula State Park “which jets onto Lake Michigan and you can watch the sun rise and set.” Terry also enjoys biking, hiking, and camping with his wife and children.

Terry is above all a devoted family man. He and his wife have adopted 12 children, loving them immensely and showing them how to properly ride a bike and bait a fishing hook.

When Terry is not spending time with his family he devotes time to his church, especially within in the financial committee and the school board. Whenever there is a difficult time in life, Terry relies on his family and his faith to guide him through saying that Romans 8:28 often provides comfort, direction, and hope: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
