Vale Park Animal Hospital's Nail Clipping Event Benefits Paws for a Cause Relay for Life Team

Dogs and cats from the Valparaiso area gathered for a discounted nail clipping event at Vale Park Animal Hospital on Saturday. Proceeds from the event went to Vale Park's Paws for a Cause team in the upcoming Relay for Life - the American Cancer Society's community-based event to raise funds and awareness for cancer support and research.

Volunteers were bustling and mingling with the customers as they clipped the fur babies' nails for a good cause. Plenty of pet owners stopped in for the fantastic $10 clipping deal. The event served as a great gear-up for the Paws for a Cause team as they anticipate the May 4 Relay for Life.

Nail upkeep for pets is an important aspect of pet health that keeps both the pet and their owners happy.

“Nails can grow into paw pads itself and can continue to grow, causing pain for the pets," said Anne Mitchell, vet technician for Vale Park Animal Hospital.

Long nails also cause pets to tear up furniture, walls, floors, and seats at home and in cars, but regular nail trimmings and products such as scratching posts or wooden scratch boards can help eliminate damage.

For some Paws for a Cause volunteers, the event meant more than simply helping pet owners for a discounted price. Relay for Life is a cause close to their hearts.

“I always try to do a fundraiser since both my grandparents had cancer. It’s a fun way to do it because I love animals," said Meagen Grybow, assistant at Vale Park Animal Hospital.

Vale Park Animal Hospital makes strides throughout the year to raise money for Relay for Life, and has been doing so for about eight years. Their efforts go a long way and make a huge difference. Relay for Life brings cancer patients, survivors, and loved ones in one place from noon to midnight to walk and raise money for the cause. The walk features a luminaria ceremony, where participants spend a half hour in silence for those who have been affected by cancer.

Some of the pet-owners who attended Saturday's nail clipping event shared how Vale Park Animal Hospital has been their trusted vet for many years. They have appreciated being a part of the Vale Park community, where they feel comforted and welcomed to bring their pets for care.

The next nail trimming event to benefit the Paws for a Cause Relay for Life Team at Vale Park Animal Hospital will be March 16. Vale Park Animal Hospital continues to appreciate their furry friends and make a difference, one paw at a time. For more information, visit their website at valeparkah.com.
