Culver's Says "Thank You, Farmers" With FFA Fundraiser

Hank and Sherman don’t usually spend a lot of time at Culver’s of Valparaiso. That’s because they are a 5 week old calf and 5 year old rabbit, respectively. But, on September 24, the duo spent their afternoon hanging out in the parking lot as part of Culver’s “Thank you, farmers” event.

“Culver’s is very into our farmers,” said Mary Foster, Assistant Manager at Culver’s of Valparaiso, “We want to appreciate where our food comes from and people who put in so much work for it.”

The event, which was part of Culver’s month-long dedication to local farmers, was a collaboration with the Morgan Township Future Farmers of America (FFA).

“We are so lucky to have Culver’s support our FFA,” said Angie Sutherlin, FFA advisor of 14 years at Morgan Township and Kouts, “Culver’s really tries to support farmers, and this is a great way for our students to feel that support.”

“Members of the organization are actually here helping us, so that’s awesome,” said Foster.

FFA students volunteered their time to run the various games and activities set up for patrons of the restaurant. While Hank and Sherman were the biggest attraction, families and kids could participate in a bozo buckets style pig toss, hay bale stacking, and “pig races,” where electronic toy pigs were placed on a track to see who would win.

“I grew up on a farm and I really enjoy farming.” said David King a 3 year member of FFA and junior at Morgan Township, “Today has been a lot of fun hanging out and meeting everyone.”

In front of the restaurant was a large tractor that drew the attention of passerbys. Scoopie, the Culver’s ice cream cone mascot, spent some time dancing in front of the tractor; he received tons of honks and waves.

The event ran through the afternoon lunch rush, giving unsuspecting members of the community a chance to interact with their local farmers. As people would spot Hank in his pen, they would gasp and walk right over. Sometimes even putting lunch off a little longer for a chance to pet the calf.

Culver’s will donate 10% of the day’s proceeds to FFA as part of their monthly Culver’s Cares initiative.
