Martin Binder Jeweler donates to Housing Opportunities

This year, Martin Binder Jeweler is implementing a creative way of giving back to their hometown community with a series of “Donation Days.” This campaign, which began this past January with a donation to the Valparaiso Family YMCA, continued Monday, April 8 with Martin Binder Jeweler presenting Housing Opportunities with a check for the amount of $1,940. That amount represents the year 1940, when Martin Binder first started the business. Today, third generation owner Bob Flude thoughtfully honored that milestone by presenting Jordan Stanfill, CEO of Housing Opportunities, the check on behalf of the nonprofit.

“This contribution is incredibly important,” Stanfill said. “We love having the support of local businesses around town because we’re a community-based nonprofit and we survive off donations like this.”

Housing Opportunities helps families experiencing or threatened by homelessness get the tools and support necessary to move and stay off the streets. They operate in Porter and La Porte counties, where an estimated 168 families are experiencing homelessness. One in three of their clients is a child, while others are unable to work due to crisis or disability. Martin Binder’s contribution will help Housing Opportunities’ clients with affordable housing solutions, and will help save homeowners who are at risk of foreclosure.

“It’s great for us here at Martin Binder to continue supporting organizations around the community,” said John Scott, marketing manager at Martin Binder Jeweler. “This was a tradition started by our founders Martin and Mary Binder back in 1940, so we always have them in mind when making decisions like this. With the work Housing Opportunities does, it was an easy choice.”

Martin Binder Jeweler is hosting three more Donation Days throughout the year. According to Scott, giving to these organizations is about more than charity. It’s about helping strengthen the community support network around Valparaiso. Lisa Franko, director of development for Housing Opportunities, noted the jeweler’s history of community engagement.

“Martin Binder Jeweler has been an amazing support of our organization for many years,” she said. “We’re working to resolve and prevent homelessness in our community and we can’t do that work alone. When the community comes together to address this issue, we all benefit from it.”
