Meet Vein and Laser Institute Professional, Dr. Omar Barakat

At the Vein & Laser Institute, Dr. Omar Barakat has played a profound role in treating those with venous insufficiency. From his compassionate character to his in-depth knowledge of medicine and radiology, Dr. Barakat strives to do his best in serving his patients day in and day out.

Dr. Barakat knew he wanted to be a doctor since he was a young kid Living in Barrington Hills, a suburb north of Chicago. The son of a neurosurgeon, Dr. Barakat grew up around someone who was passionate about his medical practice and able to help people in an incredibly profound way.

“I always knew I wanted to study medicine - it was just a matter of determining which specialty I wanted to pursue,” Dr. Barakat said. “I ended up not wanting the [neurosurgeon] lifestyle, and radiology offered a great mix of something a little more family-oriented in terms of lifestyle while still having that patient interaction and being part of a team."

Following in his father’s professional footsteps, Dr. Barakat went to Loyola University for his undergraduate studies and then on to Saint George’s University in Grenada for medical school. This environment proved to be the perfect place to learn as well as opening his eyes to the realities of healthcare.

“The biggest thing I learned is that there is a lot of underdiagnosed illness in many communities,” he said. “In Grenada, many people don’t have exposure to adequate healthcare or new technologies; physicians focus on clinical exams. Here [at the Vein & Laser Institute] I try to make parallels as much as possible to my daily practice.”

This experience, combined with his eagerness to help others, led Dr. Barakat to pursue radiology, a specialty in which he could make a significant impact on diagnosing illness.

“People refer to radiologists as the doctor’s doctor. We are diagnosticians who use imaging to aid in the care of patients,” he said. “Within radiology, I'm involved with so many facets of medicine. That’s the great thing. I deal with the surgeons; I deal with the internal medicine physicians; I deal with the pain specialists. I'm part of a team committed to treating the whole patient."

The Vein & Laser practice originated 13 years ago to treat venous insufficiency through imaging but has evolved to include non-surgical cosmetic procedures and pain management. Having been with the group for about four years, Dr. Barakat has seen vein therapies evolve from painful vein stripping methods to state-of-the-art minimally invasive treatments and takes great pride in his work.

“People with venous insufficiency are in tremendous pain; their legs are swollen and hurt. To meet them in a consultation and say, ‘Hey, there is something we can do to help you, and we’re going to work together to get there,’ is a great feeling,” he said. “Then to see them back after their treatments, and they say, ‘You know, my legs feel amazing’…It’s such a great feeling of accomplishment.”

While Dr. Barakat and his team have helped tons of people across Northwest Indiana, they are always eager to help even more people in pain.

“There are still areas in Northwest Indiana that are underserved, so that’s one of our goals: to expand our services throughout the Region,” Dr. Barakat said. “Venous insufficiency is heavily underdiagnosed, and so we spend a lot of time doing public outreach to inform other physicians in our area about this disease and the need for evaluation and treatment by experienced providers.”

Dr. Barakat is the one to turn to when it comes to finding the appropriate treatment for your venous insufficiency. To learn more about Dr. Barakat and the Vein & Laser Institute, please visit their website here!
