Isabelle Wheeler and her family spent four years searching for help after an accident that left her in excruciating pain. After years of travel, specialists, and no real answers, she finally found Dr. Ryan Porterfield and the hope that she’d been longing for.
Following a gymnastics accident just before her sophomore year at Chesterton High School, Wheeler found herself faced with a long road to recovery. She began her sophomore year in a wheelchair and neck brace, and soon began experiencing headaches that made it impossible for her to attend school regularly.
“I couldn’t get out of bed without passing out or having seizures sometimes,” Wheeler said. “It got to the point where I couldn’t even walk to the bathroom, my mom or dad would have to come take me. I couldn’t be in my room alone because if I tried to get up I’d fall or something would happen and I’d hurt myself.”
After meeting with specialists around the country, Wheeler and her parents were no closer to an answer. After a four-year journey of being told there was nothing to be done, Wheeler had lost hope in recovery. That’s when her mom let her know that she’d be going to a chiropractor.
“I wasn’t thinking much of it at first,” said Wheeler. “We did x-rays and I thought it’d be the same thing. Porterfield sat down and gave me a look. When he gave me that look I was confused, but then he told me he didn’t know how all these doctors had missed this.”
What the doctors had missed was how out of alignment Wheeler’s neck and spine were. According to Dr. Porterfield, her fall had jarred her bones, preventing them from growing properly and causing many of her issues. With a little hope finally stirred in her, Wheeler began treatments and found her life improving almost immediately.
“I started treatment and about a week later I was feeling better, which was amazing. I lived with an eight out of ten pain for four years, so to be able to go to a five was amazing. I felt like a whole new person,” said Wheeler.
Now, after two months of treatment, Wheeler is getting her life back. Thanks to her success with Porterfield Family Chiropractic, she plans to attend school this coming year, travelling all the way to Ball State.
“I’m going to major in nursing,” Wheeler stated. “My sophomore or junior year when I was in the hospital I had an awesome nurse. We connected well and she always found something to make me smile. Once I met her and saw how she changed my experience I realized that was what I wanted to do.”
For Isabelle Wheeler, Porterfield Family Chiropractic has been a positive force in her life. She now has hope and looks forward to her future.
“I am just happy that we found Dr. Porterfield because he’s honestly changed my life. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Wheeler said. “I never thought I’d be able to go back to my regular life.”
