Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter Taking Steps to a World Free from Alzheimer’s

Every 65 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease.

For the affected individual and their family members alike, there is a kind of helplessness that accompanies Alzheimer’s, especially given that there is no known cure. Thankfully, the Alzheimer’s Association is continually working to ensure that we will one day live free from the risk of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is a piece of the nationwide fabric that is Alzheimer’s Association, the leading voice for Alzheimer's disease advocacy, fighting for critical research, prevention and care initiatives at the state and federal level. Everyone involved in the organization works diligently to make Alzheimer’s awareness a national priority. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. The vision? A world without Alzheimer's disease.

The Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter serves 73 Indiana counties, helping support the more than 110,000 Hoosiers living with Alzheimer's disease and their 338,000 unpaid caregivers throughout the state. The organization weaves communities together by county through gatherings and calls to action. For instance, licensed social workers can meet face to face with locals in Lake County —including family members and caregivers— who are directly affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. They offer various resources, such as advice, educational sessions, updates on new treatment options, and simple support.

Other resources available include online message boards and resources (alz.org/care) as well as 24/7 Helpline services (1-800-272-3900.) The professionally staffed Helpline offers information and advice to more than 300,000 callers each year and provides translation services in more than 200 languages. Experts and fellow answer-seekers on the organization’s online community are ready to help with questions and give support. As the largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's research, the Association is committed to accelerating the global progress of new treatments, preventions and ultimately, a cure.

As for the calls to action, Alzheimer's Association organizes several large fundraisers a year, each able to be implemented in individual counties across the nation. Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is no exception: the next big call to action that you can join in on is the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s—Lake County. The walk will take place on September 23 at the Lake County Fairgrounds and it’s completely free to register, but donations are encouraged!

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease care, support, and research. The event is held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. The fundraising dollars earned in Lake County’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will fuel Alzheimer’s Association’s mission, and participation in this event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in our communities.
