IUN Freshman to Physician Seminar

High school students and college undergraduates who represent underserved and underrepresented minority groups are invited to explore medical school and careers in medicine, dentistry, and the allied health professions at the Indiana University Northwest Freshman to Physician Seminar, scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon, Monday, Feb. 18 in the Bruce W. Bergland Auditorium, located in the Savannah Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
High school students at all grade levels who represent underserved and underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to attend. Highlights include:
- Interactive sessions where students can review medical “cases."
- Discussions with pre-health professional and medical school students.
- Discussions with physicians, dentists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
- Students will also learn how to stop the bleed, perform CPR and more. Emergency room physicians will give tips on how to best prepare academically for a career in health care.
The event is a partnership with Project Outreach and Prevention’s (POP) Health Professional Enrichment Program to increase the number of underserved, underrepresented high school students choosing careers in medicine, dentistry, and allied health professions.
Indiana University Northwest offers the premier pre-health professions program in Northwest Indiana. The IU School of Medicine – Northwest - Gary (IUSM-NW-G), located on the same campus, is the region’s only medical school. The IU Northwest College of Arts and Sciences offers pre-professional tracks in medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical and occupational therapy, pharmacy, physician assistant and veterinary science. Students may pursue these studies in connection with four-year degree programs in biology, chemistry or psychology, which are the most popular pre-professional study tracks at IU Northwest.
