Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is celebrating students who are the first in their families to attend college—also known as “first-generation” students—with 80’s themed celebrations on the Westville and Hammond campuses.
The “I’m First” event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in room 170A of the Library Student Faculty Building (LSF) on the Westville Campus, and 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the Student Union & Library’s “Room with a View” on the Hammond Campus.
“As an institution with a significant number of first-generation college students, Purdue Northwest seeks to celebrate the strides they have made with this unique event, and put a spotlight on the academic progress they symbolize,” said Roy Hamilton, assistant vice chancellor for Educational Opportunity Programs and director of the McNair Achievement Program.
Hamilton said the 80’s theme carries historical significance. The concept of a “first-generation” college student was first introduced into federal policy in 1980, during the passage of the Higher Education Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. The 54-year old act created the Federal TRIO Programs, eight federally funded programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
This event is free and open to all students, faculty, and staff. Mark Lopez, chief of staff to U.S. Congressman Pete Visclosky, will attend the Hammond campus event. For more information call 219-989-2779.
