20th Annual Iron Horse Hike, Cub Scout Advancement Trail, Jamboree on the Air and LaSalle Council Tiger Cub Fun Day

The Hike began in 1990. Scouts to came together for a day and hiked a trail. It has grown from several hundred hikers that year to almost 3000 last year. Wow! It has grown to include scouts, family, and friends. Everyone is invited to attend. Bring a friend! Bring your sister! Bring your little brother! Bring your parents!


Potato Creek State Park Worth noting – The gate fee to Indiana state parks is $5 per in-state car and $7 per out-of-state car. Please pass this information on. Car-pooling will help reduce a troop or pack’s expense of getting scouts, family and friends to the Iron Horse.

Registration is Saturday at the Potato Creek Beach House from 9am to 1pm Eastern Time. The registration fee is $5/person. This includes the hike, the trail map, the patch, insurance and fun. More details on the website.

The Trail Medal is in its 8th year this year at the Iron Horse. With your registration you will receive a Special Iron Horse Map with Railroad related questions. The Answers to these questions can be found along the trail. Write down your answers. If you get all of them, you can then purchase the Iron Horse Trail Medal for $4.

Great Food is available at the Iron Horse for very reasonable prices at the Golden Spike Diner (aka Iron Horse Café). Members of Sakima Lodge will be serving: hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, soft drinks, bottled water and trail munchies at reasonable prices.

Cub Scout Advancement Trail - added in 2007. Several stations will be set up along the Iron Horse Trail for cub scouts to work on advancement. See the IH Website for more details in October.

JOTA is held at the same time as the Iron Horse Hike. JOTA? That stands for Jamboree on the Air. Ham radio operators and Scouts from across the globe will be talking to each other. We will have a few ham radio operators on hand so scouts at the Iron Horse can talk to scouts across the world! Wow! A JOTA patch is $5.

Tiger Cub Fun Day returns with all kinds of activities for Tiger Cubs. TCFD starts at 10am and ends at 2pm. There is no cost to participate in the Tiger Cub activities, but Tiger Cub families will still need to pay the park entrance fee. Tiger Cubs wishing to participate in the Iron Horse Hike and buy the Iron Horse patch need to register for the Iron Horse and pay the registration fee of $5.

Geocaching at the IH was new for 2007 and was a tremendous success. Need a challenge. Be prepared to geo-cache the IH. Bring your own GPS units. Register for the Iron Horse. Plug in the special waypoints received at the Registration area. Then go “Cache the Horse” A special issue “I Cached the Horse” patch will be available. Look for details on the Iron Horse Website in October.

Cycle the Horse – new in 2008. Need a challenge? How ‘bout cycling the Iron Horse. A new program this year, Iron Horse activities along the bicycling trails of Potato Creek State Park. A special “I biked the Horse” patch will be available. So bring your bikes to the park and CYCLE!!! Check the Iron Horse website in October for details.
