Volunteering with the VCFE

I recently got the chance to do something really cool. I got to volunteer with Valparaiso Community Festivals and Events during the huge annual event known as the Valpo Brewfest. Here’s how everything went down:

My time as a volunteer started with a meeting the night before the event. Tina St. Aubin, Executive Director for the VCFE had everyone scheduled in certain places, everything organized, and answered all the questions from us, the curious volunteers. Pizza and beverages were supplied that night and we ate while we went over all of the details of the day to come. We all wanted to be as prepared as possible for the coming event.

The biggest thing I learned while working with all of these great volunteers is that VCFE strives because of the volunteers. There are not many employees there. They count on the volunteers to help them, and all of the hard work comes into play and the job gets done.

So on the day of the Brewfest, we ID'd guests as they entered the fest, scanned tickets, and handed out bracelets to about 3200 people. They then proceeded into the park to enjoy a great day of beer tasting and socializing. Of the 3200 people attending the event 50% are visiting from other areas. The VCFE really goes all out to make great tourist attractions that will bring people into our community and check out all that Valparaiso has to offer. This was the largest Brewfest in Valparaiso to date.

Many of the VCFE volunteers have been doing this for many of the downtown festivals and events for years. Some are new (like myself) who are trying to help and enjoy some time with the community.

I had a great time. It is very fun to meet new people; both fellow volunteers and people attending the events. Everyone is so happy to be out and attending events like Brewfest and Popcorn Fest they are usually very nice, polite, and understanding of any issues that may come about.

Many people driving/walking by wanted to know of the event and how to be a part. This event as well as many others of VCFE attracts a huge crowd, amazingly with very few issues. 3200 people came together surrounded by beer, and I saw no fights, no angry people and very few issues with the entire event from start to finish. VCFE did great, as usual. They work very hard in planning these events to be sure they go well. It must be stressful, but Tina and her crew are seasoned pros so you would never guess.

I will certainly help again and possibly for other events!
