This week's submission for Active in NWI is provided by Tom Seely of Chesterton, IN. Seely is the General Manager of Pine Ford Lincoln in La Porte, IN, a family man, and as active as they come.

Read on below to see Seely's straight-forward approach to being active in NWI.

Goal: To push my body to the limit. There is nothing better than seeing what my body can endure. Consistently taking my workout to the next level and putting in hard work pays off in the end. I love pushing myself and doing things I never thought I could do.

Camaraderie-  the spirit of goodwill and fellowship that exists between friends.

This is what drives me the most; the look on a friends’ face, the high-five you receive when they accomplished their goal you that helped them to complete. During the Wisconsin Tough Mudder we raised over $15,000 for the “Wounded Warrior” fund. The event was 13 miles with 28 military type obstacles (Fire, Electric Shock, Ice and Mud). It is touted as the “Toughest Event on the Planet”. Our team finished in 3:50 hours and created a bond between us that will last for years.

Reason I Stay Active: For me, working out isn't about feeling good about how I look, but rather feeling great about how I'm feeling. The endorphins I get from working out are completely addicting and allow me to feel strong and energized all day long (after a good morning workout of course!).

Where I Get Active: The best place in NWI is the Indiana Dunes State Park. We have a wonderland right in our own backyard that is hardly utilized. In an hour you can have the most incredible workout in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Midwest. My favorite is Trail 8, which is a 4.2 mile loop which includes 232 stairs and a stop at the shores of Lake Michigan.

Training: Cross Fit training at Applied Strength and Conditioning in Chesterton, IN

Events: Tough Mudder WI and Chicago in May 2013. Climbed Longs Peak 14,300 ft, Half Dome and Angels Landing. Hiked Yosemite National Park.

Set an Example: I try to show my daughter Paige, son Ben and their friends that there is more to life than TV and the computer. We sled in the winter, set up neighborhood baseball games in the summer and try to be outside and active as much as we can.

Results: At nearly 44 years old I feel stronger and in better shape than I did at any other point in my life. I tell everyone if you take the first step and start a light exercise program, you will start enjoying the benefits immediately and with exercise comes healthy eating with healthy eating comes the will to exercise even more. It becomes an incredible circle and soon you will be living life to the fullest!
